Built for what actually happens in a shop

A shop floor takes abuse a garage floor doesn’t:

  • Point loads. Jack stands, engine hoists, and equipment feet concentrate a lot of weight into a very small area.
  • Impact. Dropped tools, dropped parts, dropped everything.
  • Chemicals. Solvents, gear oil, coolant, brake cleaner, battery acid.
  • Heat. Welding sparks and slag.
  • Traffic. Rolling toolboxes, creepers, and equipment on casters.

Which means the system that’s right for a two-car garage isn’t automatically right for your shop. Thicker builds, more aggressive topcoats, and sometimes a different finish entirely.

What we ask before quoting a shop

  • What actually happens in here? Woodworking and welding are different jobs.
  • Are you rolling heavy equipment across it?
  • Do you want slip resistance? Shop floors get wet and oily, and there’s a real trade-off — more grip means harder to sweep clean. We’ll walk you through where you want to land.
  • Are you marking it out? Equipment zones, walkways, and safety lines can go into the floor rather than on top of it.
  • Is it heated? That determines whether we can work in the winter.

Pole barns and unheated shops

A pole barn floor is a different animal from the floor in a house. Often no vapor barrier underneath, frequently a rougher pour, sometimes control joints in unhelpful places.

None of that is a dealbreaker. It does mean the moisture test matters more, not less, and it means the prep is a bigger share of the job.

If your barn isn’t heated, we’re working April through October — with polyaspartic stretching the shoulder seasons.

What the topcoat is rated to take

Numbers you can check, instead of adjectives:

  • Over 9 ft·lb direct impact. That is the dropped-tool test, done to a standard rather than to a sales sheet.
  • 8,600 psi compressive. Jack stands, engine hoists, equipment feet — the loads that come down through four small pads instead of spread across a room.
  • Abrasion tested to ASTM D4060, 30 mg lost over a thousand cycles. That is casters, creepers and boots, measured.
  • Holds its color — under ΔE 2.0 at 500 hours. If your shop has skylights or a big south-facing door, a cheap clear coat goes amber in a couple of summers. This one does not.

A test result is something you can hold a contractor to. A number of years is not, which is why we quote the first and never the second.

If the shop was just built

New concrete is the most common reason a coating gets delayed — and the most common reason one fails in its first year.

A standard system wants 28 days of cure. That is the manufacturer’s own condition of coverage, not us being careful. Concrete goes on giving off moisture long after it is hard enough to drive on, and a coating laid over that gets pushed off from underneath. You cannot see it happening until it lifts.

But you do not automatically have to wait. There is a moisture-mitigation primer built for exactly this — made for concrete poured inside those 28 days, and for concrete carrying humidity all the way up to 100 percent. When your build schedule cannot give us a month, that is the conversation, and it is a decision we make at the estimate rather than a delay we hand you afterward.

What we will not do is put a standard system on green concrete and hope. That is how a brand-new shop gets a failed floor before its first winter is out.

Ask whoever poured it what was in the mix

If your concrete is fiber-reinforced — and a lot of new work is — those fibers come up through the surface.

Every one of them has to come off before anything is coated. Fibers left in the surface give you uneven texture and voids underneath, and a void is very difficult to put right once there is a floor over the top of it. It is a real step with real hours attached to it.

So it is one of the first things we ask on a new pour. If you do not know what went in, ask the crew that poured it — the answer changes the quote.

In-floor heat has to come off

Plenty of Iowa shops have radiant heat in the floor, and it is the detail most often missed until we are standing in the building.

The heat goes off two to four hours before we start, and it stays off through the whole cure. Not turned down — off. A warm floor changes the way the coating cures, and that is not something anybody gets to do over.

In January that means a cold shop for a couple of days. Worth knowing before it is a surprise.

Questions

Will it stand up to a floor jack?

Yes, when the system’s specified for it. That’s part of why we ask what you do in there before quoting.

Can I weld on it?

Slag will mark any coating. Use a mat in your weld area — same as you would on bare concrete you cared about.

My shop floor is stained beyond saving. Can it be coated?

Yes. Staining is cosmetic. What matters is whether the concrete is sound and whether contamination has soaked into the pores. We’ll assess it on site.
