Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic: Which Is Better?
Short answer: they’re not competitors. Most good floors use both — epoxy underneath, polyaspartic on top.
The honest version
Epoxy is the word everybody knows, so it’s the word everybody searches. Polyaspartic is the better product. Both of those things are true at the same time, and neither one settles what should go on your floor.
They do different jobs. Epoxy builds thickness cheaply, which is what you want in a base layer. Polyaspartic survives sunlight, cold, and hot tires, which is what you want on the surface.
If a contractor tells you one is always the answer, they’re describing what they buy in bulk, not what your floor needs.

Cure time
Epoxy: slow. Often 12–24 hours between coats, longer before you can park.
Polyaspartic: fast. Can be walked on in hours. This is why one-day installs exist.
Sunlight
Epoxy: ambers and yellows. Shows up first in the strip by the garage door.
Polyaspartic: holds its color.
Cold temperatures
Epoxy: needs roughly 50–55°F to cure properly. That closes the season in Iowa.
Polyaspartic: tolerates lower temperatures, stretching the working season on both ends.
Hot tire pickup
Epoxy: vulnerable, especially thin coats.
Polyaspartic: resistant. This alone is why it belongs on a garage floor.
Thickness & cost
Epoxy: builds thickness affordably. Good value per mil.
Polyaspartic: costs more per square foot.
Working window
Epoxy: forgiving. You have time to work it.
Polyaspartic: unforgiving. Cures so fast there’s little room to fix a mistake — which is exactly why installer skill matters more with it.
What about polyurea?
You’ll see it advertised, often with a number attached — “20x stronger than epoxy.”
Polyurea and polyaspartic are close relatives; polyaspartic is essentially a slower, more workable polyurea. Marketing uses the names loosely and the strength multipliers are not standardized measurements from any independent body.
Treat those numbers as advertising. What actually determines whether your floor lasts is whether the concrete was ground properly and whether anybody checked it for moisture first.
What we recommend
- Garage: epoxy base, flake broadcast, polyaspartic topcoat. Sun, salt, and hot tires all live here.
- Basement: more flexibility — no sunlight. The moisture test drives the decision more than the product does.
- Shop or pole barn: depends entirely on what happens in the room. Point loads and chemicals change the answer.
- Commercial: polyaspartic-forward, because downtime costs more than material.
The part that matters more than either one
Neither product will save a floor that wasn’t prepped.
A coating is a bond. If the concrete wasn’t opened up mechanically, or if vapor is moving up through the concrete, the best material on the market still comes off — it just takes a little longer.
So when you’re comparing quotes, the product name is the least useful thing on the page. Ask what they do to the concrete first. Here’s how we prep a garage floor.

Is polyaspartic worth the extra money?
In a garage, yes — sunlight and hot tires are exactly what it’s good at. In a basement it matters less. We’ll tell you which case you’re in.
Can I get a one-day install?
Polyaspartic makes it possible. Whether it’s right for your floor depends on prep — and prep is the thing a one-day promise most often squeezes.
My old epoxy floor is peeling. Is that the epoxy’s fault?
Almost never. Peeling is a bonding failure, which means prep or moisture. Same coating, prepped properly, usually would have held.
